Dr Lee Pheng Soon
Executive Director

Dr Lee Pheng Soon has a degree in Science from Flinders Uni, an MBBS from NUS, and a Fellowship in Pharmaceutical Medicine from the Joint Royal Colleges of Physicians, UK. He worked about 30 years in drug and nutrition research for two major European pharmaceutical, and one US paediatric nutrition, companies. Now retired from clinical research and corporate medical affairs, he is a GP in a small HDB group practice. He has served SMA continuously as a Council Member from 1992,and as the President from 2003-2006. He currently heads both the Medical Indemnity function and the Centre of Medical Ethics and Professionalism.

A/Prof Gerald Chua
Immediate Past Executive Director

Dr Gerald Chua graduated in Medicine in Singapore in 1994 and obtained his Membership of the Royal College of Physicians of the UK in 1999. He received his Certificate of Specialist Accreditation in Respiratory Medicine in 2003. He was awarded the European Diploma in Intensive Care in 2004 by the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine. He was elected a Fellow qua Physician of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow in 2009, and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 2011.

Dr Chua completed his post-graduate intensive care training with a clinical fellowship at the Department of Intensive Care of the University Medical Centre St Radboud, Nijmegen, The Netherlands in 2006. His main clinical and academic interests are in hemodynamic monitoring and renal support therapy in the intensive care unit. Dr Chua's other interests are in medical and nursing education. He is a member of the Intensive Care Medicine Sub-Specialty Training Committee, and is the Associate Dean of Alexandra Hospital.

He chairs the Jurong Health Services Bioethics Committee.

Dr Devanand Anantham
Deputy Director

Dr Devanand was trained in interventional pulmonology and clinical ethics at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Centre, Harvard Medical School. He has clinical interests in pleural diseases, advanced diagnostic bronchoscopy, thoracic ultrasound and end-of-life ethics. His research interests include the management of malignant pleural effusions using tunneled catheters, endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) in the diagnosis and staging of lung cancer and life support decision making in the intensive care unit.

Dr Devanand has also served as the editorial consultant for the American College of Physician's Information and Education Resource on Pneumothorax and is a reviewer for Thorax, Respirology, QJM International Journal of Medicine and Southern Medical Journal.

Dr T Thirumoorthy
Academic Director

Dr Thirumoorthy was the Founding Director of the Dermatology Unit in Singapore General Hospital in 2002, and is currently the Academic Director of SMA CMEP. He currently holds the position of Adjunct Professor and Director of Professionalism Program at the Academic Development Department at DukeNUS Medical School.

Dr Thirumoorthy was also appointed as Executive Director of SMA CMEP from 2011 to 2016. In 2004, Dr Thiru was awarded the SMA Merit Award for services contributed in medical ethics and professionalism.

He was an elected member of the Singapore Medical Council (SMC) from 2005 to 2008 and re-elected in 2014 to 2017. He continues to serve on the SMC Ethics Committee. He was a member of the MOH National Medical Ethics Committee (NMEC) from 2005 to 2012. He served as the Chief Censor of the Academy of Medicine of Singapore from 2012 to 2016.

Prof Teo Eng Kiong
Board Member

Prof Teo graduated with a degree in medicine from the National University of Singapore in 1989 and attained his Master of Medicine in Internal Medicine and MRCP (UK) in 1994. He is one of the pioneers of Changi General Hospital and has risen up the ranks to Senior Consultant and Head of Gastroenterology in 2004, Chief of Medicine in 2006, Deputy Chairman of the Medical Board in 2008 and Chairman in 2012 till 2020. He is currently the Deputy Group Chairman, Medical Board (RHS), Singhealth.
 
While on HMDP training at the University of Michigan Medical Center, he wrote research papers in hepatitis which were published in high impact publications. This has remained his forte as he continues to contribute to scientific journals and conference presentations.

Prof Teo was the President of the Gastroenterological Society of Singapore from 2008-2010 and is currently the Assistant Master and Council Member of the Academy of Medicine Singapore. He holds Professorship from the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School as well as NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and is an Adjunct Professor of the Singapore University of Technology and Design. He is also a Clinical Examiner of the PACES/MRCP, MBBS and Duke-NUS examinations.

Prof Teo was the Chief Editor of the Singapore Medical Journal from 2010-2013. He is presently an Editorial Board Member of the Journal of Gastroenterology & Hepatology and also serves as a reviewer for journals like Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics, Singapore Medical Journal, ANNALS, Journal of Medical Virology and Biomedical Central.

Dr S Suraj Kumar
Board Member

Dr Kumar graduated from the National University of Singapore in 1984.

He obtained his Masters degree in Family Medicine in 2011 and obtained his Fellowship in the College of Family Physicians in 2013. He is also a fellow in the chapter of Family Physicians in Academy of Medicine since 2015.Dr Kumar has over 20 years of experience in general practice and family medicine. He is actively involved in medical teaching and is a tutor in the Graduate Diploma Family Medicine as well as the associate programme director of the College Masters Programme in Family Medicine. He is also a Family Physician preceptor at Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School.

Dr Kumar's special areas of interest include family medicine, geriatrics, men's health, preventive health and health education.

A/Prof Lai Siang Hui
Board Member

Dr Lai Siang Hui is Senior Consultant at Department of Anatomical Pathology, Singapore General Hospital, and concurrently Director of SingHealth Tissue Repository and the Advanced Molecular Pathology Laboratory (AMPL@SingHealth). He was the pioneering Director of the Anatomic Pathology Residency Programme at SingHealth, and handed over this duty in September 2016.

After obtaining his basic medical degree from the National University of Singapore, he embarked on training in Pathology and successfully obtained the Diploma in Medical Jurisprudence with Distinction from the Society of Apothecaries of London. He was also admitted as Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists (UK) in 2009. Prior to joining SGH, Dr Lai practiced as a forensic pathologist at the Health Sciences Authority of Singapore. At the Centre for Forensic Medicine, Dr Lai held the appointments of Head (Research) and later Head (Training & Education), running the departmental training program until his departure in 2007.

Dr Lai is committed to the training of future generations of doctors and specialists and holds teaching positions at various universities. He is concurrently Clinical Senior Lecturer at the Department of Pathology, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University Singapore, and Associate Professor at Duke-NUS Medical School. Besides the usual and routine work, Dr Lai finds time for other professional and social activities. He is currently President of the Medico-Legal Society of Singapore and past Chairman of the Medical Alumni Association (Southern Branch).
